REELiving with Sarah Rotella

Reelout Rita: Your short GAY WOMEN WILL MARRY YOUR GIRLFRIENDS has over 5 million hits on YouTube.  Did you ever expect it to become so popular?  What’s the background on that video?
Sarah: Adrianna DiLonardo (the co-creator of The Gay Women Channel) and I made Gay Women Will Marry Your Boyfriends as a response to College Humour’s Gay Men version.  We made it for fun and as an excuse to shoot something and within the first few hours it had gotten 800 views, which we thought was awesome. By the end of the day, it had over 28,000. The experience of going from film festivals where your audience is between 10-100 people and releasing a video on a platform like YouTube where millions of people watched our video from all over the world was really rewarding as a filmmaker.
Reelout Rita: Your comedic shorts have been Reelout favourites over the years and you obviously have an excellent sense of humour.  What/Who makes Sarah Rotella laugh?
Sarah: I love women in comedy like Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. Although, the co-creator of The Gay Women Channel, Adrianna DiLonardo has probably made me laugh more than any of those women. She is an amazing comedic writer, she’s crazy smart, and she has this natural ability for writing funny dialogue. I’ve known her for a very long time and I think she’s really developed as a writer and is working her way up to be a powerful voice in the industry and definitely one we need advocating for the LGBT community.
Reelout Rita: What are you working on now/in the future?
Sarah: Adrianna and I have a lot of new ideas for The Gay Women Channel so you should definitely watch out for our videos that release on Monday’s + Wednesday’s. We’ll be doing some collaborations with other YouTubers and releasing some videos that revolve around gay men, similar to our Putin Airlines video. Outside of YouTube, Adrianna is wrapping up a feature screenplay so we’re starting to turn our attention towards that for 2014.
